Weekly Update 3/10/20
Dear Families,

*Musher Tracking: Students are spending these two weeks tracking mushers in the Iditarod! They each have three mushers to track daily and record their progress in the race. This would be a fun conversation starter if you are looking for something to ask about your child's day!
*IAR Testing: IAR Testing begins TOMORROW! We will have six total tests-three for math and three for ELA. Our testing times are 10:40-12:10 every day, ending on March 19th. The best thing you can do to help your child do their best is to help them get a good night's sleep and eat a healthy breakfast. It will be a long two weeks of testing but we have some fun activities planned to balance it out. We can do it!
Dates to Remember:
3/17: No School
3/20 Field Trip to Elgin Symphony Orchestra
3/23-3/27: Spring Break

*Read to Succeed: Read to succeed forms went home last week. Since students read at home, this is a great way for them to keep a book log and earn Great America tickets. They are not due back to school until February, so there is plenty of time.
*Holiday Spirit Week: Yesterday, a sheet was sent home about the Holiday Spirit Week next week. Just in case you didn't get it, here they are below:
Monday: Wear your favorite holiday colors
Tuesday: Elf Day
Wednesday: Wear your favorite holiday hat
Thursday: Wear your ugliest holiday sweater
Friday: Pajama Day!
Rocket Math: As an extra motivation to continue learning our facts, students will be taking timed tests every day and working their way up the "Multiplication Tower of Success".
Looking for good conversation prompts to get your child talking about their day? Ask them every day about what level of the multiplication tower they are on. You can also ask them about desk wrapping and how it works. :)
Have a great rest of your week!

Math Test: Upon doing the review in class today it seems we have forgotten some of the skills we learned before break. That being said, I am still sending home the review today but I am giving us one more day of review tomorrow and moving the math test to Wednesday.
MAP Testing Schedule:
Reading: Wednesday 10:30-12pm
Math: Thursday 1:45-3pm
Holiday Cards: The week before winter break we will be doing a fun holiday writing activity and we need your help. Each child needs the front of a holiday card to bring in anytime this week or next week so that we have it starting the week of December 16th. The card needs to be mostly a scene with very few or no words. Photo cards won't work for this project. I explained the details to the class today and showed some examples of what types of cards work best. Please do not go out and buy any, just send in the front of a holiday card that you get in the mail. If you don't get any, no worries, I will have extra. Thanks for your help.
Have a great week!
Vicki Proffitt

Weekly Update 11/22/19
Dear 3rd Grade Parents,
Thank you for your quick responses to my email about our movie. We are excited for our PJ/movie party today! We are sad to say goodbye to our friend Daniel today but we are glad we can have some fun before he moves away!
Curriculum update:
Math: We are finishing multiplication with 6,7,8 and 9's. Our review will be Monday after Thanksgiving break and our test will be Tuesday. Our next chapter is multi-digit multiplication.
Science: Our young meteorologists are all working hard to research a type of extreme weather. In the coming weeks before winter break, they will be creating weather forecasts in the green screen room based on their research. Keep on the lookout for a link to these forecasts in upcoming emails.
Reading: Today we are finishing our nonfiction unit and over the next few weeks until break we will do a novel study of Third Grade Angels!
Writing: Yesterday, we published the final piece of our personal narrative writing. When we come back from break, we will start Expository Nonfiction writing where we will do animal research and writing. It's a really fun unit!
Important Updates:
MAP Testing: It's already time for our winter session of MAP testing. Our class will be taking the reading MAP test on Wednesday, December 4th from 10:30-12:00pm and the math MAP test on Thursday December 5th from 1:45-3:15pm. As always, please make sure students are well-rested before these tests so they can perform at their best! It's always good if students can be here on these days but if not, no worries, there are scheduled make-up days.
Mon. December 2nd: Back to school after Thanksgiving Break
Tues. Dec 10th: Career Day
Fri. Dec. 20th: Last day before winter break
I hope all of you have a wonderful Thanksgiving with your families!
Sincerely,
Vicki Proffitt

Weekly Update 11/1/19
Dear Parents,
I hope you are all doing well. It was so great to meet with you for conferences and share your child's growth. After meeting with you, I know we will have great partnerships throughout this year.
Next Week in 3rd Grade:
Next week we will be continuing our nonfiction unit in reading, finishing up bar models and starting multiplication in math, starting our weather unit in science and continuing to write personal narratives.
Important Reminders and Information:
Halloween Party: We had such a fun party yesterday Thanks to all of the parents who helped and to our room parents who planned and organized a great party! We really appreciate all your hard work. Pictures will come at a later date.
Snow Gear: With snow already happening it's important to remember a few things. The kids go out for recess unless it is below zero wind chill so please make sure they have warm weather gear for going outside. They can bring a snow bag to keep in the hallway with all of their items. It is also helpful if students can have shoes to change into, so that we can leave the slush and wetness on boots in the hallway.
Websites: Many people asked at conferences about math websites to use at home. There are many listed on our class website under the "math" tab. Students should have passwords and usernames for all of these on their password cards. The only one that is new is Matholia, which they don't have on their password cards, but the username and password are the ones they use for their google drive without the @student.sd25.org at the end. Please know that Matholia is glitchy and works best with flash player turned on and in the Firefox browser. You also need to switch the home page from Australia standards to the U.S. Common Core standards every time you use it. The nice thing about Matholia, though, is that it's Math in Focus's online component so the skills directly align to what we are learning. Our class website is www.proffittclass3.weebly.com
As a reminder, math will be getting a little more challenging in the coming months and the best thing you can do to help is make sure you are practicing multiplication facts with your child each night.
Dates to Remember:
11/5: Chapter 5 Math Test
11/8: End of 1st Trimester
11/14: Spirit Day-College Wear
11/15: Report Cards sent home
11/25-11/29: Fall Break No School

Weekly Update 4/2/19
Dear Parents,
I hope you had a wonderful spring break with your kids! It's good to be back in the swing of things as we take on our final stretch of third grade!
Important Info:
*IAR Testing-We started our state Illinois Assessment of Readiness testing today. Please make sure students are well-rested for these tests. It is important that students be here for these if possible, however we understand that things come up so they will have a chance to make-up any tests they missed at a later date. Our schedule is as follows:
Tuesday, April 2nd: ELA (part 1) 10:10-11:40
Wednesday, April 3rd: ELA (part 2) 10:10-11:40
Thursday, April 4th: Math (part 1) 1:20-3:00
Monday, April 8th: Math (part 2) 10:10-11:40
Tuesday, April 9th: Math (part 3) 10:10-11:40
*Math Tests-Math tests are being sent home today to be signed and corrected by Friday. As a team, we have decided to put the amount correct out of the total problems at the top and then indicate whether they show M D or N for that standard based on this assessment. Please understand that tests are NOT the only assessment we use in determining their report card grade, but we are hoping this will help you have an idea of how they are doing within this standard so far. As always, please let me know if you have any questions.
*Field Trip- Our field trip to the Elgin Symphony is this Friday, April 5th!

Weekly Update 3/6/19
Dear Parents,
I hope you are doing well and staying warm! Hopefully spring is on the horizon soon! This week we will be finishing Charlotte's Web and next week we will do some culminating activities to show our learning. Our Forces in Action unit in science has been super fun! Check out Seesaw this week for a hopper experience showing force from your scientists!
Last week the third grade classes ran an all school leadership assembly to introduce our school Dance for Heart fundraiser. Our class explained the importance of eating fruits and vegetables at each meal. Check out the link to our website below for pictures. They did great and they were so proud! We also had an opportunity to hear from Dr. Carter about his trip to Japan and what schools are like over there. You can find those photos under the "Class Highlights" tab.
Important Information:
*Student Led Conferences: This spring our third-grade classes will be participating in student-led conferences. This is an opportunity for your child to share their strengths, learning, and goals. Your child will be responsible for directing the conference. This experience will help your child take ownership of their own progress and learning, as well as work on time management and organization. As family members, we ask that you focus on the learning process, recognize your child’s achievements, ask questions when the information shared is unclear, and work with your child to set goals for future success.
Please use the sign-up genius that will be sent out and plan on bringing your child with to the conference. We look forward to sharing this exciting opportunity with you and your child.

Weekly Update 2/6/19
Dear Parents,
I hope you are doing well and staying warm!
We have been having a lot of fun in third grade these last couple of weeks! We are learning about the importance of our three branches of U.S. government, finishing up our fiction units in both reading and writing and using bar models to solve two-step division and multiplication problems in math. I am always so impressed with how hard these students work and the great ideas they have to share!
Important Information:
*Valentine's Day- Valentines parties are scheduled to begin at approximately 2:30pm on Thursday, February 14. If your child is passing out Valentines cards to other students, the cards cannot have any candy or food attached to them. Items such as goodie bags filled with treats or candy are also not permitted. Trinkets such as pencils, erasers, stickers, etc., are great alternatives as long as they are not edible. Also, please make sure there is a Valentine for everyone in the class. We want everyone feeling loved and included on this day. Also, please have your child decorate a box or bag at home for valentines collections during our party. You can send these in before or on the morning of our party. Feel free to use one from previous years if needed!
*Erin's Law-On February 14th we will also be having our Erin's Law presentation after lunch. Please see the weekly school emails if you would like your child to opt out of this presentation.
*This Friday is College Spirit Wear Day!
Thanks so much for your help in making our Global Play Day a success! We have had so much fun using our creativity and imaginations today!

Weekly Update 1/16/19
Dear Parents,
We have had a great couple weeks back from break. In math, we are patiently learning the process for long division. We are still working on our fiction unit in literacy and this week for our Illinois unit, groups had to work together to study a historical Illinois tribe and they will be teaching the class about their tribes tomorrow!
Important Info:
*Open House-We are having open house next Thursday evening from 7-8pm. Your children will be your personal tour guides to show you around the school. The invitation with more information is attached below. We hope you all can make it!
*Remind.com-I just received notice that Remind.com will no longer support Verizon service. If you have Verizon and would like to continue seeing reminders from Remind.com about class information you will need to download the app or enable email notifications before January 28th.
Have a great rest of your week!

Weekly Update 1/9/19
Dear Parents,
Happy New Year! We are so excited to be back and diving into some great learning! In math we have started learning division with multi-digit numbers and in reading we started our fiction unit focusing on types and elements of fiction. We are now beginning social studies and learning about Illinois characteristics and history.
Important info:
* Homework Template-Starting this month, I will no longer be emailing the homework template daily. I want students to get in the habit of looking in their planners on their own to check their homework. I make sure to initial their planners every day and check to make sure they have written all of their assignments so they should be accurate. This will help prepare them for 4th grade.
*7 HABITS FAMILIES WORKSHOPS – Keep that New Year’s resolution and sign up to attend the engaging, family-strengthening workshop series based on the 7 Habits of Successful Families! The deadline is this Friday, and six more participants are needed to run the workshops. The certified facilitators will be offering a seven series workshop in the evenings beginning next Tuesday, January 15th. More details can be found here: https://tinyurl.com/7Habits2019Winter

Weekly Update 12/20/18
Dear Parents,
We have had a really fun week with many culminating projects! We are making cereal box book reports to sum up our novel study groups, array cities to show what we know about multiplication and doing some fictional holiday writing with the cards you sent in. We are almost done recording our weather forecasts to show our research about severe weather. Those will be posted after break!
There will not be any homework over break to allow students to enjoy time with family. However, if you are looking for some reinforcement to keep skills fresh over break, reading is always good as well as practicing multiplication facts. Our next math chapter when we get back from break is long division so students will benefit from knowing their multiplication facts as well as possible.
Don't forget tomorrow is PJ day!! I wish you all a very happy holidays and a Happy New Year! See you in 2019!

Weekly Update 11/13/18
Dear Parents,
What an exciting couple of weeks it has been! We finished our landforms unit in social studies and have switched to science to begin our weather unit. This week, we will wrap up our novel study of Third Grade Angels for reading and we began our multiplication unit in math!
*New Student: Welcome, Dhruv! He joined our class last week and we were all so excited to have a new addition to our classroom!
*Class Party-We filled up our marble jar!! Yahoo!!! Students voted on a Movie/PJ/Stuffed animal party to take place this Friday! Students can come to school in their PJ's and bring only one stuffed animal that fits in their backpack. Our movie will be G-rated and students can bring in some choices for us to vote on if they wish.
*Report Cards-Report cards are sent home this Friday via email. Please remember, these are standards based, which means these are standards students are learning all throughout the year. You should not anticipate a M in every category because many of these standards we have just started learning or will continue to practice throughout the year.
*MAP Testing: MAP testing will be December 4th in the morning and December 5th in the afternoon.
*Snow Gear: As the weather gets colder, snow is more likely. Please make sure if it is snowing that your child has a bag for winter gear and separate shoes to change into so that they aren't tracking all the wetness into the classroom with their boots. Remember that we go outside for recess, even when it is cold so please make sure students have appropriate recess attire.
*Halloween Party-Another thank you to all who made our classroom party a success!! Click here to see pictures of our party!
I hope you have a great rest of your week and a Happy Thanksgiving!

Here are a few things you need to know:
World's Fair: All third grade classes are doing a World's Fair to showcase our knowledge of Chicago! Students have worked in groups to figure out what they would like to create and what materials they will need. If students are talking about bringing materials to school, that is what they are for!
The World's Fair will be on Wednesday, October 17th from 2:30-3:30pm! We hope you can join us!
CogAT Testing: We will have CogAT testing next week, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 2:00pm-3:00pm. If a student misses the test, there will be a day for them to make it up!
Parent Conferences: I am so looking forward to seeing all of you at conferences and sharing the hard work and growth your children have made so far this year! Don't forget to sign up for a time slot if you have not done so already!
Check out pictures from our Wendella field trip here! Thanks again to our wonderful chaperones for helping us out!
Just a reminder there is no school tomorrow or Monday!!

Weekly Update 9/26/18
Dear Parents,
Our week has been so much fun! Our class is working in groups as travel agents to plan a Weekend in Chicago for an out of town family! I am so happy with the positive teamwork I am seeing as these projects unfold. They are loving this project so much that when I announced it was recess time today, they groaned, "Nooooo!" Music to a teacher's ears!!! Students will be using the green screen room to create podcasts for their final projects. I can't wait to share these with you!
*Field Trip: Our field trip on the Wendella boat is Friday! We are looking forward to experiencing the architecture tour and riding on the Chicago river. Just a few reminders:
1. We will be eating on the boat so students need to bring a sack lunch with all disposable items.
2. Please check the weather and make sure students are dressed appropriately. It will be windy and we will be on the river so I recommend jackets with hoods in case they get chilly and comfortable shoes.
*Orange Ruler-Orange ruler information was sent home last week. Please let me know if you did not receive it. As a school we have already raised $15,000 of our $20,000 goal!

Next week your children will work in groups to become "travel agents" for an imaginary family who wants to visit Chicago. More details revealed next week!
On Monday we will also be starting a new math chapter on 4-digit addition and focusing on the six key elements of all fiction stories in reading.

Don't forget, field trip forms are due on Monday, September 24th!
*Wishtree: Next Friday we will also have an assembly to kick off "One Book One School".
*Seesaw: Parent notes for Seesaw went home on Monday. I hope you get the chance to sign up and connect to your child's Seesaw journal. It's a great way to see what they are working on at school. Please let me know if you did not receive this letter and I will send another one!

Weekly Update 8/29/18
Dear Third Grade Parents,
It has been such a wonderful start to the school year! We have spent this past week getting to know each other and learning the routines of our classroom. I am so happy and impressed with how hard students have been working each day and I have to say, they are a very KIND group of kids. I know this year will be a great one!
This week in math we are practicing writing numbers in standard, word and expanded form. In reading, we have been practicing good reading strategies and writing about topics of our choice. We also just started our social studies unit on Chicago. It has been so much fun learning about the Chicago flag and the history of the city.
Here are a few important updates and reminders:
Homework Templates: Each day I will send home a "homework template" for you to view that lets you know what assignments your child has to do for that evening. These assignments should already be written in your child's planner and they should be encouraged to be checking their planner each night before they complete homework. We will never have homework on Fridays, so you will not get an email on those days. I have been sending these out since Monday so if you have not been receiving them, please let me know right away so I can add you!
Remind.com: One of the ways I communicate to you as parents is to text brief reminders about important events or dates. The texts are all done through an app called Remind.com. Remember to sign up for those reminders if you have not done so already and would like to. You can easily join now by clicking the link: https://www.remind.com/join/d294c9
Class Website: On the home page is where you can find important dates and events coming up. Under the math and reading tabs you find links to websites that we use like Raz Kids or Freckle. Under the math tab are pages broken down by chapter. You will see vocabulary words, the parent letter, the main skills for the lesson as well as all the power points I will be using to teach that chapter. These will come in handy for any student who is absent for a day to help them see what they missed in class if you choose to do so.

Dear Parents,
I hope you are enjoying this beautiful weekend! I can't believe our school year is almost close to an end! I am getting sad to say goodbye to your wonderful children, but trying to enjoy my last two months with them!
This coming week we will be finishing up our Illinois History Projects in Spark Notes and presenting them to the class. When we are finished, I will share the links with you so that you can see the hard work your child has done! We will also be starting our science unit on weather this week, beginning a chapter on area and perimeter in math and continuing to study poetry.
Here are a few updates and reminders:
Westgate Penny War!- This fundraiser was started by one of our fifth grade classes. Proceeds go to support the water crisis in Cape Town, South Africa and will run from April 23rd-May 4th!

Spring Pictures: Spring pictures are handled differently than fall pictures. All students were photographed and all students were given a packet of pictures. If you want to keep the entire package, you pay $45 (online or check payable to 'LifeTouch'). You may also purchase 1 or more sheets and send in the appropriate payment. Alternatively, you may send in the entire package of pictures and owe nothing. We request families make their decisions within the next week. Any questions, please contact Lauren Rogers ([email protected]).
ABC Countdown- The ABC countdown begins May 2nd. Schedules went home last week for this. Please let me know if you have any questions or didn't receive one.

Weekly Update 4/4/18
Dear Parents,
Welcome back!! I hope you all had a relaxing and enjoyable time off with your kiddos! I enjoyed some much needed rest and relaxation but was eager to get back into the swing of things and be with your kids!
Our first week back is off to a great start and we are looking forward to some exciting activities over the next few weeks! We have started our poetry unit in reading and are continuing our fractions unit in math.
Illinois Research Projects: Today we started our social studies unit on Illinois history. Students are working in groups to research a different time period in Illinois history and gather information which they will present in Adobe Spark Notes. Within each time period they will be researching important events that occurred, jobs people held, transportation people used and many others! I can't wait to share the finished product with you when they are finished!
Personalized Learning: We will begin personalized learning projects on Friday and will work on these each Friday for several weeks. Personalized learning is a great way for students to do individual research on a topic that they are wondering about and it's a great opportunity for them to learn new ways to gain information. Students will get to compile their findings in a media of their choice at the end of the project.
Elgin Symphony Field Trip: Our field trip is scheduled for Wednesday, April 11th from 10am-1pm. Please still send a snack for the morning, as we will be eating a later lunch when we return. Meghan Tiedge and Jennifer Zimmerman are our chaperones. Chaperones should try to be here by 9:45. Thank you!
MAP Testing: We will be doing another round of MAP testing in the next few weeks. Our reading MAP test will be Thursday, April 12 from 1:35-3:05. Math MAP will be the following week on Tuesday, April 17 from 1:35-3:05.

MAP Testing: We will be doing another round of MAP testing in the next few weeks. Our reading MAP test will be Thursday, April 12 from 1:35-3:05. Math MAP will be the following week on Tuesday, April 17 from 1:35-3:05.
Weekly Update 3/13/18
Dear Parents,
I just want you to know how PROUD I am of your kiddos. They have been working so hard these last few weeks, especially with long division. I am so happy with their perseverance and determination. WAY TO GO!!
This week we are reading the last few chapters of Charlotte's Web and we will finish it before break. We are really enjoying this novel study and doing related extension activities that go along with the book. This week and next week we will get a brief introduction to fractions in math and we will complete the remainder of the chapter after break!
Tracking Mushers: Over the past week, the students have been having a blast during math time going online to watch the positions and calculate the stats and miles of their mushers in the Alaskan Iditarod Dog Sled Race. Did you know that the race was inspired by a dog named Balto? In 1925, this dog was able to transport a diptheria antitoxin via sled to prevent an outbreak from occurring. We'll be reading about Balto this week in class and then watching the "Balto" movie (rated G) as an accumulation of the Iditarod race.
Fractions: This chapter will be an introduction to reducing fractions into simplest form, adding fractions and a few other concepts. I have added two fraction games websites to the math section in our website. Students will have an opportunity to work on these in class, but feel free to use them at home for more support.

Weekly Update 2/28/18
Dear Parents,
I hope you had a chance to get out and enjoy the nice weather and sunshine today! I know we enjoyed it at school! This week we have been working on our Charlotte's Web novel study in reading and long division in math. Your kiddos have been working really hard and it shows!! We have also been going over the tools and practice tests for PARCC testing which will start next week. Please see the information below for our scheduled days and times.
Headphones: Please make sure your child has headphones as they are needed for PARCC testing next week. All students had them at the beginning of the year, but some have been misplaced or broken. If your child needs headphones, I will be reaching out to you in a separate email. Thanks so much for your help with this!
PARCC Information: All of our PARCC tests will be in the afternoon during our normal reading block, since our specials are in the middle of our morning. Our third grade team met to make sure we are still getting in math and reading throughout the week, so some days we will be off schedule to do reading during our normal math time in the morning. Please make sure students are well-rested and eating a good breakfast in the mornings so they can do their best on the tests. Also, the third graders are NOT allowed to have mints for the test, but instead we will allow a second healthy snack for them to eat in the afternoon on testing days. Please let me know if you have any questions.
PARCC Testing Dates:
Tues. 3/6 (ELA 1): 1:20-3:20
Wed. 3/7 (ELA 2): 1:20-3:20

Weekly Update 2/15/18
Dear Parents,
What a great week it has been for us!! This week we started our novel study of Charlotte's web and we are looking forward to continuing this for the next few weeks. We also had a fun Valentine's Day party yesterday and we are so thankful for all the parents who came to help and who planned behind the scenes! Check out some pictures on our class website in the class highlights section!
Important Information and Reminders:
*Headphones/Earbuds: In the beginning of March we will administering PARCC tests. These are done on the computer and all students need headphones or earbuds. If you did not send those in at the start of the school year, we will need them before March. Thank you for your help with this.
*3rd Grade Olympics:
Starting tomorrow and all through next week, all third graders will have the opportunity to engage in some Winter Olympic Game STEAM activities to go along with our Science, Writing, Literacy, and Math units. Students will have fun rotating through the five third grade classrooms to participate with the activities.
We would like for you to be aware that some of the lessons may include utilizing the following food items for experimentation:
Mint Life Savers
Life Saver Gummies
Candy Canes
Gummy Bears
Your child will only be touching and working with those food items. They will not be ingesting them. If it is a problem for your student to be exposed to the items, please let us know immediately. We look forward to celebrating the Olympic Games together!
*Leadership Day: Leadership Day is rescheduled for tomorrow! Our class will be showcasing our Leadership Notebooks as community members tour the building. They are so proud of the work they are compiling! Students have picked out some very special pieces in their notebooks that they would like to share with our guests.
*We are in Need: We have been working so hard that we are almost out of glue sticks and Expo markers! We use the Expo markers everyday for math as students solve problems on their individual whiteboards. It is more fun than paper and pencil! :) Any donations of these items to our classroom would be greatly appreciated! Thank you for considering!

Room reps should double check with their classroom teachers to verify the start time as there may be a few exceptions. If your child is passing out Valentines cards to other students, the cards cannot have any candy or food attached to them. Trinkets such as pencils, erasers, stickers, etc., are great alternatives as long as they are not edible. Items such as goodie bags filled with treats or candy are also not permitted.

You can even leave a comment of encouragement for them! Sometimes we will have posts once a week and sometimes it may be more frequently. This is a great way for you to see what your child is learning and projects they are working on in the classroom!
*Leadership Family Night-The Jedi Leaders of Westgate Elementary School invite your family to join us in learning more about The Leader in Me at Westgate! This lively evening is from 6:30pm - 8:00pm on Friday, February 9th. Come feel "The Force" through student poster board presentations and a student/teacher panel, and then create a family "talking stick" (a Jedi mind trick of Habit #5)!Space is limited for this event! Weekly Update 12/5/17
Thank you so much for taking the time to meet with me at conferences. I really enjoyed sharing your child's progress with you and getting to know each of you a little better as well!
We are SO EXCITED to showcase our learning of Chicago neighborhoods on Thursday! Our class has been working hard synergizing and working together to create cultural dances, dioramas and posters of important places in the south side of Chicago.
We have started our fiction unit of study in reading and we are looking forward to exploring all the different types of fiction over the next few months!
Here are some important updates and reminders:
World’s Fair Information for Thursday, December 7th:
* Please have your child report to the LMC at 6:15 pm.
* All parents can just wait in the Commons until the concert begins at 6:30 pm. (If you are facing the stage, our class will be on your right side).
* If you donated a dish, you can set it on the tables by your tent card.
* Please remember to bring in a serving utensil for your dish. The function should end at 7:30 pm.
Read to Succeed: Each year students have the opportunity to apply for free Great America tickets by reading at least 6 hours. Since I know that all of the students in our class read each week for their Raz-Kids homework, I'm just going to have them fill out the logs here at school. I also applied for all of them to receive a free ticket online and there's no need for you to do anything or sign a form! The tickets usually arrive at the end of the school year around May. There is nothing more you will have to do for this!
Book Orders: Book orders were sent home yesterday and are due on Friday, Dec. 8th! Please make sure you submit all orders no later than the end of the school day on Friday. These books make great holiday gifts and I want to make sure they arrive in time before break.

Students can come dressed in their pajamas or comfy clothes and can bring ONE stuffed animal that can fit easily in their backpack. We are looking forward to it!

*Parent Conferences- Parent conferences are next Monday and Tuesday! Thank you so much for signing up to meet with me. I am looking forward to discussing your child's progress with you. Please make sure you are on time for your conference, so that I can be respectful of everyone's time. If something happens and you cannot make your conference time, please send me an email to let me know and we can find a time to reschedule.

Please make sure you are on time for your conference, so that I can be respectful of everyone's time. If something happens and you cannot make your conference time, please send me an email to let me know and we can find a time to reschedule.

Weekly Update 11/8/17
It has been a fun couple of weeks in third grade! We enjoyed our Halloween parade and party at the beginning of last week with creative and fun activities planned by our room parents. Then we ended our week with a fabulous Art Appreciation lesson on Henry Matisse!
Important Information:
Chicago World's Fair: As a culminating event to our Chicago unit, all of the third grade classes will be presenting a Chicago World's Fair on December 7th! Each classroom has a different part of the city and we have divided groups into different neighborhoods to research and present to you in December! An RSVP form was sent home yesterday and is due back by December 1st. We hope you can make it!
Author Visit: We are fortunate to have Henry Cole (the author of Nest for Celeste) coming to our school tomorrow. He will be spending all day at Westgate in which he will have an assembly and he has offered to eat lunch with a few of our third graders! How great is that?! We are so excited for his visit tomorrow!
Report Cards and Conferences: Report cards will be sent home next Friday via backpack mail. Conferences will be the week of Thanksgiving. If you have not signed up for a time you can still do that through the Signup Genius link. If you cannot make it on those days, please reach out to me to arrange and alternate time.
A special thank you to all of our parents who helped make our Halloween party and Art Appreciation a success. We really appreciate you donating your time to our classroom.

Weekly Update 10/26/17
We have had a very exciting week full of fun! This week we had some parents come in to do Reader's Theater with us, we put clues together to solve a Halloween puzzle, and we created and viewed our Weekend in Chicago podcasts.
Weekend In Chicago Podcasts: Your children worked so hard over the last few weeks pretending to be travel agents and planning a trip for a pretend out-of-town family. All I have to say is WOW!! Their podcasts are AMAZING!! Not only did they learn about Chicago, but they also learned how to work their Google Drive, find, save and rename images, and turn notes into a script. They were so excited to view them today and so was I! You can view the podcasts on our Social Studies tab.
Halloween Party: Thank you so much for starting to bring in donations for our Halloween Party! We really appreciate your help! Don't forget our lunch hour on Halloween is from 12:30-1:30 with the parade beginning at 1:45. If your child is going home to get ready in their costume, they will dismiss at 12:30. We are looking forward to a fun day!
Math Tests: Chapter 3 math tests were sent home today. Please help your child make any corrections needed, sign the top sheet and return it to school tomorrow.
Reader's Theater: Thank you to all the parents who volunteered to do Reader's Theater with us! It was so fun to see the students opening up, speaking with accents and having fun while practicing their oral reading fluency. Please see the class highlights tab for pictures!

Weekly Update 10/18/17
We have been having so much fun this week finishing our Weekend in Chicago projects, learning about nonfiction text features and starting our new chapter on adding to 10,000 in math. We have also enjoyed getting our Flat Stanley letters returned to us and reading a few each day! We have had letters from all over the United States and many other countries including Slovenia, India, Spain, England, Germany and Vietnam. This has been such a fun way to help us learn about other cultures and communities!
Here are a few updates for the week:
*Jackets- We go outside for recess twice a day and the weather is starting to get cooler. Please remember to send jackets or sweatshirts with your child to school every day so they are prepared for the weather outside.
*Multiplication-We are starting to practice our multiplication facts at school so we are ready for the multiplication chapter in math when it comes. If you would like some reinforcement at home, we have been watching some great videos by Jack Harttman on YOUTUBE. He has some songs to go along with multiplication facts that the kids are enjoying.
*Math- I know sometimes the math taught in our new curriculum is different from the way we were taught as kids. If you are ever unsure of what to do to help your child with their homework, feel free to email me. I am always glad to help. I also provide the Chapter Wrap Up's on the back of the parent letter that goes home at the beginning of each chapter. The chapter wrap-up is good about showing what and how the students are learning. This is also posted on our class website under the math heading if you ever need it.

Weekly Update 10/11/17
These past few weeks we have been working on Mental Math strategies in math and finished our launching unit in reading and started our nonfiction unit. We are still learning about Chicago, but we have moved from lessons to a group project.
Wendella Field Trip-Thank you so much to Hillary White and Lisa Kusumpa for chaperoning on our field trip! We had a great time and it was perfect weather. We learned so much about Chicago's history and architecture. Thankfully, our chaperones were also great photographers too! Check out pictures on our class website under the "Class Highlights" tab!
Weekend in Chicago Project- We have started group projects where students are pretending they are travel agents and they are setting up a weekend of fun things to do for a pretend family visiting Chicago! They are finding attractions, restaurants, a hotel for the family to stay at and some transportation options for the family to take to get around. We will put all of this together into a podcast in the next few weeks for a final product and I will share them with you when they are ready! The kids have been so excited about this and I am impressed with how well they are working in groups. I use a rubric to periodically grade their individual participation and effort in their group. These rubrics and the rubric for their final podcast will go toward their final grade. I am so excited to see what the groups are going to put together!

Weekly Update-9/27/17
We have been loving this great weather! Our class has settled into our routines and I am impressed with the responsibility I am seeing! This week we have been diving into our new math chapter learning how to mentally add with number bonds. We are finishing our last paragraph writing this week focusing on narratives and today we learned about the Chicago fire and had a debate on how we think it started. It was great to hear students' thoughtful responses!
Here are some updates for the week:
Nest for Celeste-Nest for Celeste is a district wide initiative to have all students and families in our district reading the same book at the same time! It's a great book and was perfect beach reading on my honeymoon! Families will be sharing the book at home together and then students will be connecting to the book through a variety of activities in our classroom and the LMC throughout the month of October. We will be starting classroom activities to go along with the book next week, so if you haven't purchased the book yet, it is greatly encouraged. The Arlington Heights library only has about 5 copies so it will be hard to borrow!

Field Trip- Get excited for our field trip to downtown Chicago this Friday, September 29th! Please make sure that your child arrives at school by 9:05 am. Due to the fact that we need make our departure on the boat on time, the bus will leave Westgate at EXACTLY 9:15 am.
Please make sure that your child dresses for the weather. Remember, that the wind chill off the lake will make the temperature feel a lot cooler. It is highly advisable to dress in layers, wear pants and socks, and to bring a jacket. It is also recommended for your child to wear sunblock to school.
We will be eating our lunch on the boat ride. Unless you pre-ordered a lunch, please don’t forget to bring a sack lunch and drink packed in a disposable bag. Everything will be thrown away on the boat when we are finished.
The following people pre-ordered a lunch and do not need to bring their own sack lunch to school: Kady and Ana
Chaperones: We will have small groups listed for you to supervise about 5-7 children while on the boat. Please also bring a carry on bag large enough to hold your group’s sack lunches. You can just arrive with your child in our classroom at 9:00 am, and be sure to bring a sack lunch for yourself too.
We are looking forward to a fun and beautiful day downtown!

Weekly Update-9/20/17
We have been having another great week in third grade!! We are having tons of fun learning about the Chicago River, comparing and ordering 4 digit numbers, learning to make connections while reading and practicing how write an informative paragraph.
Here are a few updates for the week:
*Field Trip Forms-Field trip forms were sent home yesterday. Please sign and return them no later than Monday, September 25th. After learning about the Chicago River today, we are very excited to see many Chicago landmarks as we cruise the river next Friday! Our parent chaperones are Hillary White and Lisa Kusumpa! We are looking forward to a great outing and hoping for good weather.
*XtraMath and Raz Kids- It seems that everyone has been able to access these sites successfully. This will be homework each week for your child. The great thing about this is that you can also track your child's progress through these sites to be able to get an accurate picture of their growth through the year.
*Library Books-Just a reminder library books are due back to school on Thursdays so they have time to get checked in before our library checkout time on Fridays. Thanks so much for your help with this!
*Volunteers-A HUGE thank you to our room reps, Hillary White and Biz Malone for organizing the sign-up geniuses for parent volunteers. You can refer to the email they sent out with the sign-up genius links to sign up for a job you would like to do. I am so appreciative of any help!
*Math Test on Friday-We have a math test on Friday. Students will be bringing home their math workbooks and the chapter review tomorrow so that they can look over any items they are unsure about before the test. The chapter wrap-up on the back of the home letter sent out at the beginning of the chapter is also a good review to use.

Weekly Update-9/14/17
We have been having another FANTASTIC week in third grade!! We are having tons of fun learning about the history of Chicago, practicing cursive, learning to respond to our reading and practicing how to form an opinion paragraph.
Since our year is now underway and we have started to get into our normal routine, here are some things that would be helpful for you to know:
*Class Website-Our class website has changed. It is now proffittclass3.weebly.com. I added the 3 at the end for "3rd grade". The previous website redirected them to another Mrs. Proffitt's class somewhere else when they searched in google, which made it super confusing. This website seems to work much better! Please make note of the change.
*Headphones-We are starting to use computers regularly for reinforcement of skills. Many of the programs we use have an audio component, so it can be very distracting if multiple students are listening out loud on their computers. If you have not had a chance to send in headphones please do that as soon as you can.
*Sketch Pads-Mrs. Miller is requesting that all students bring in their sketch pads by next Wednesday when we will have art again. If you haven't sent one in yet, she is asking for the spiral bound ones at the top that have pages with no lines.
*Password Cards-Password cards were sent home on Monday. They have every website and login information your child will need for accessing sites at home. Please keep these in a safe place. Also, all of these sites have links on our class webpage. It's best if they go straight to our class website to access them so it takes them to the correct login screen. XtraMath will ask for a teacher email address, which I have also included on their password card.
*Typing Training-We are practicing our typing skills several days a week. This is helping students to learn proper hand placement on the keyboard and build those finger muscles to become faster at typing. We will be doing many projects involving Googledocs this year and this will help them get prepared. They are welcome to use it at home too!
*Library Books-Our library book checkout is on Fridays but the librarian is requesting that books come back on Thursdays so they have time to check them in. If you could help your child remember this, that would be great.

Weekly Update-9/7/17
It was so wonderful to see so many of you last night. I hope you walked away with feelings of an exciting year ahead! Hopefully all of your questions about third grade were answered. I apologize if there is anything left unexplained as I was very tired by that point in the evening.
There are a few things I forgot to mention last night. Each week, I will send out an email, just like this one, highlighting important events, news about our class or any information that needs to be passed along to you. I usually send these on Wednesdays or Thursdays, so you can look for those to come weekly. I will also post the same information on our class website so that you have the information in multiple places.
Make sure you sign-up for the Remind.com text reminders if you would like to use this feature and didn't get to register for it last night. It's easy and the directions are included in the last page of the packet.
If you filled out the Parent Volunteer sheet I handed out last night and took it home with you, please send it back when you can so that I can forward them to our room reps to get the sign-up geniuses created.
I can not tell you how much I am enjoying your kids this year and how much I love the fun personalities we have in our class!! I hope you saw last night the passion that I commit to my career and how hard I work to provide the very best for your children by catering to their specific needs. They are such a SWEET group of kids and I love coming to work every day because of them!
If you have any questions or concerns throughout the year, please don't hesitate to contact me at any time. I feel that parent and teacher partnerships are essential in providing the most successful learning environment possible for my students.
